Job Description

The Product Safety Engineering Leader will work with design teams to ensure that safety and compliance issues associated with products are properly addressed during the design process.  They will work with teams during the design of new products and changes to existing products in order to ensure compliance to applicable standards and to prevent injuries, damage to the environment or to property.  Working with the product design groups, the standards group, the legal team, and the quality team, they will develop and implement the policies and procedures necessary to ensure safe designs.  If, or when necessary, they investigate the causes of product failures that resulted in, or had the potential to result in, injuries or damage. They also interface with global regulatory agencies regarding any safety concerns.

 

Qualifications

  1. Product development experience:  successfully launched a new product into a regulated market.
  2. Requires knowledge of:
    1. Product Safety Laws and Consensus Standards
    2. Product Liability, Warranties, Litigation, and Insurance

Enforcement Actions of CPSC and other relevant agencies

  1. Worst Case Analysis
  2. Use of Human Factors assessments
  3. Statistical quality methods
  4. methods including
  1.  Risk Assessments

ii.    Failure Modes and Effects Analysis

iii.   Fault Tree Analysis

  1. Product safety design auditing experience
  2. Root cause investigation

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering or Physics; 10+ years of progressive safety/compliance/quality experience in product development/sustaining engineering for a manufacturing company in a regulated industry preferred
  • Extensive experience with Government rule/regulation interpretation and reporting
  • Experience in product design/development desired
  • Experience with safety related product recalls
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast paced environment
  • Strong communication (verbal and written), organizational and data analysis skills with the ability to work within diverse multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and ability to manage project timelines
  • Ability to use state of the art techniques to perform early assessment and prediction of reliability, safety and quality levels of designs in systems with critical functional applications
  • Ability to identify problems, suggest viable solutions and make decision within the scope of responsibility
